      Parents looking down

Growing up, I was very close to my mom and dad. They were older than most parents and I grew up in a neighbourhood with no other children to play with but my older brother. My parents always were there when I needed to talk or just to play a game with someone. They were understanding of the phases I went through and supported me in school.

My dad got sick in my junior year of high school. I had to take over a lot of his duties around the house because my older brother was away for college. Then my senior year came, and my dad was diagnosed with cancer and was told he had 3 months to live. I took over more roles then, to my father, I was his daughter, his nurse, and his comfort because my mom had surgery months before for a tumour in her uterus and was still recovering.

My dad died 2 months before I was to graduate and I swear he was there that night watching me. My mom slowly withered away before me after my dad died. In my first semester of college my mom was diagnosed with lung cancer and was given an option to have surgery. Mom didn't really want have the surgery, but my brother and I pursued her until she agreed to it.

I was being selfish and didn't want to be an orphan. Mom had the surgery and was OK afterwards. But her will to survive was not there. She gave up because she missed her husband, my father, so much, she grieved herself to death. I lost my mother two months after her surgery. That has been nearly 3 years ago.

I am a single mom of a 7 month old son I love very much. I pray that my parents are looking down on their first grandson and proudly smiling at what I've become and my son, for he is so full of life.
